Kaiser Permanente Senior Director Communications in Renton, Washington
Accountable for strategy, design, policy, operation, and performance of Kaiser Permanente Washington's corporate communications and external relations function for the enterprise and target markets including: all-staff communications, internal communications for divisions, business plan priorities and strategic initiatives, communications consulting, issues management and crisis management, public relations, reputation management, media relations, social media, speaker support, community relations, sponsorships, and events. Operates in close strategic alignment with Executive Communication and Public Policy Communications functions.
Work closely with enterprise marketing to help inform and execute brand development and deployment, and collaborate on enterprise marketing strategy, investments, campaigns, and work plans. Lead alignment and linkage with other communications resources including Web Services, Provider Services, Washington Permanente Medical Group (WPMG), and the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute. Actively engage with internal Lean resources, HR partners, Customer Service, Facilities, Compliance, Risk Management, and Legal to optimize business consultation service model across enterprise.
Provide communications expertise, consultation, and strategies for senior leaders to enhance the organization's internal work environment and build its brand and image among staff, members, and the community. Provide oversight for the design and execution of communication strategies to support business plan priorities and direct resources needed to achieve goals. Provide oversight for development and deployment of external relations strategies and programming to advance business plan priorities.
Strategic Oversight and Management:
Advance our mission and business plan priorities by overseeing development and implementation of communications and external relations strategies, systems, and programs that
Create internal and external awareness, understanding, and support of organizational goals, strategies and initiatives, advance effective change management, and impact activation and/or call to action.
Ensure messages are clear and consistent within and across internal and external strategies, and disseminated appropriately and effectively to target audiences.
Foster linkage and connections across enterprise workstreams and initiatives to minimize waste, identify risks, optimize resources, and affirm or adjust efforts and priorities.
Monitor internal and external business developments and factors to identify opportunities and challenges that may be addressed in part through communications and external relations strategies.
Set overall internal and external communications strategies based on business plan priorities, business data, and best practices across the communications spectrum to effectively engage target audiences for business results.
Provide communications expertise and guidance to senior leaders to strengthen leader impact internally and externally in support of strategic business priorities.
Guide senior leaders to focus, cultivate, coordinate, and leverage relationships statewide with business, civic and government leaders and represent Group Health in the community in support of our mission, our strategic business priorities, and to position us as an industry innovator and leader.
Work with senior leaders, enterprise marketing and brand to address current and emerging internal and external communications needs and opportunities relative to external strategic business partners at enterprise level and in target markets.
Design and deploy process for setting department priorities driven by strategic planning cycle and business plan, including check-and-adjust and recontracting to address real-time changes driven by executive leadership and market factors.
Ensure the organization has appropriate resources and infrastructure to effectively reach internal and external stakeholders.
Work with management team of functional leads to oversee department staff (approx 20-25), contracted contributors, and agencies.
Set direction for skills assessment, career planning, staff development, performance agreements and evaluations to ensure alignment of individual and department work with business goals.
Actively collaborate on Strategy Development leadership team and as a dotted line leader on the Marketing Cabinet
Design and maintain department management system including linked visual system and metrics.
Oversight for department and programming budget (approx. $5-7 million).
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience in a corporate setting providing corporate communications and/or public relations.
Bachelor's degree OR four (4) years of directly related experience.
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
Deep knowledge of communications and external relations principles and practices.
Ability to develop effective communication programs for core work, current strategic initiatives, as well as timely, sensitive issues.
Experience providing counsel to senior leaders.
Experience managing multifunctional department.
Proficient with relevant technology.
Communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
Fifteen (15) years experience in a corporate setting providing corporate communications and/or public relations, five (5) years in health care setting.
Experience in settings with customized local market presence.
Experience using Lean thinking.
Demonstrated leadership in peer-to-peer engagement.
Budget management and planning, including purchasing and vendor relations.
Project management and familiarity with Lean.
