Kaiser Permanente RESEARCH MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST - Behavioral Health Research - CHR in Portland, Oregon

To conduct comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic protocols in the context of preventive medicine research projects.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate/consult in the development and implementation of new mental health interventions as well as ongoing revision and evaluation of existing interventions.

  • Conduct therapeutic mental health interventions according to research protocols. Perform case management activities to maintain and enhance study participant retention and adherence. Use appropriate computer programs to assist in participant identification; data collection; tracking; ordering referrals, laboratory tests or procedures; or communication, such as RRS, Health Connect, study specific programs, CAS, and other computer software as needed.

  • Enroll participants into research studies.

  • Collect and/or monitor the collection of accurate, detailed research data for ongoing projects.

  • Coordinate intervention programs. Activities may include logistical planning, MOP development, scheduling of staff, management of day-to-day operations, negotiating for space and other resources, and monitoring and evaluating intervention processes. Performs other duties as requested.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum one (1) year of experience with cognitive-behavioral therapy.

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience treating persons with severe mental illness.


  • Master's degree in psychology, counseling or other therapy oriented field.

License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A

Additional Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of cognitive-behavioral therapy, with adults and adolescents.

  • Working knowledge of the etiology and treatment of severe mental illness.

  • Comfortable working with participants with severe mental illness.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.

  • Effective counseling skills.

  • Ability to problem-solve in a variety of settings.

  • Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience with diagnostic interviewing.

  • Working in a research setting.

  • Working with adolescents in a clinical therapeutic setting.

  • Thorough knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapies.

  • Thorough knowledge of group process, behavioral self-management, and motivational interviewing.

  • Working knowledge of research methodology and systems theory.

  • Working knowledge of structured research psychiatric diagnostic interviewing.

  • Excellent computer skills.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Excellent counseling and interviewing skills.
