Kaiser Permanente RESEARCH ASSOCIATE III in Portland, Oregon

Leads high-level professional, substantive, technical, and administrative coordination for senior investigators and investigators in the design, implementation, day-to-day operations, and dissemination of findings of research, demonstration, and evaluation projects. This position can serve as an investigator extender that functions independently and can represent the investigator at scientific meetings and presentations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Participate with senior investigators and investigators in designing, developing, implementing, and conducting research projects in the substantive field of knowledge on which the research is based (e.g., economics, sociology, epidemiology, anthropology, psychology, etc.), and, at the direction of an investigator, take the lead in designing, developing, and implementing smaller research projects connected to an investigator's research agenda and program of research (multiple related projects).

  • Supervise and train project staff and direct a diverse set of research activities on two or more large research projects or on a program of research with multiple components.

  • Translate specific research questions into appropriate functional and analytic designs and protocols and operationalizing conceptual variables; take; at the direction of the investigator, create or assist, new health-related interventions and lead substantive sections of a research study related to knowledge and expertise.

  • Participate in designing and interpreting statistical analyses of research data and in preparing presentations and publications to disseminate findings from research projects; at the direction of the investigator, take the lead in designing, implementing, interpreting and reporting analyses of research data to address specific subsidiary research questions connected to a research program or agenda. Lead author on publications and/or scientific presentations. May provide specific vital expertise at co-author level (e.g. biostatistics or systematic reviews.

  • Develops proposal ideas with Principal Investigator. Actively seeks new funding opportunities for investigator's program of research; functions as co-investigator or key personnel on proposals; may serve as Principal Investigator with CHR Leadership approval.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum six (6) years of experience in social, behavioral, medical, or health services research.

  • Minimum two (2) years of administrative and management experience.

Education

  • Doctoral degree with at least six (6) years of relevant research experience or a Master's degree with more than ten (10) years of relevant research experience.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

  • Various combinations of research training and experience can qualify persons with graduate degrees or the equivalent for the RA-III

  • position.

  • Considerable experience in the application of word processing, spread sheeting, Internet Browsers, statistical software packages, and database management software to research activities.

  • Working knowledge of standard desktop computing software packages (word processing, spread sheeting, Internet browsers).

  • Thorough knowledge of statistical theory and hypothesis testing, quantitative or qualitative analysis methods, and database management techniques relevant to the design, conduct, and analysis of research projects in the pertinent substantive area.

  • Working knowledge of medical and health care issues sufficient to communicate effectively and to collaborate with investigators in the conduct of research.

  • Working knowledge of specialized models and theories in a discipline area applicable to the research.

  • Excellent writing and communications skills.

  • High level of computer operations skills, including word processing, spread sheeting, presentation software, and Internet browsers.

  • Excellent organizational and supervisory skills to carry out research activities under the general direction of an investigator.

  • Licenses are necessary only for those whose substantive field and work assignments require it (e.g., M.D., R.N., R.P.T., R.Ph., M.S.W.). RA-IIIs from an academic discipline typically hold membership in their respective professional associations. The appropriate master's or doctoral degree is usually sufficient for admission to membership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4) years of research administrative and management experience.

  • Extensive research experience in social, behavioral, health services, clinical, or related areas.

  • Research experience within an operating health care system.

  • Some college-level teaching experience in substantive discipline.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of statistical theory and hypothesis testing (including a statistical analysis software library, such as SAS, SPSS, or S+), quantitative or qualitative analysis methods, and database management techniques relevant to the design, conduct, and analysis of research projects in the pertinent substantive area.

  • Working knowledge of medicine, public health, and health services issues relevant to the application of research to health care phenomena and health care policy.

  • Through knowledge of standard desktop computing software packages (word processing, spread sheeting, presentation software, Internet browsers, etc.).

  • Thorough knowledge of specialized models and theories in a discipline area applicable to the research.

  • Some training in management or administration and supervision would be helpful.

  • Excellent organizational, writing, communication, and supervisory skills.

  • Excellent word processing, spread sheeting, and Internet skills.

  • Excellent computer programming skills.

  • A doctoral degree with at least eight (8) years of health-related research experience.
