Kaiser Permanente Senior Manager, Compensation in Oakland, California

This role can be based in any of the Kaiser Permanente regions.

Oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of the company's compensation function. Manages the development and administration of job descriptions, job evaluations and salary surveys. Establishes salary structures, develops salary budgets and prepares policies and procedures to ensure the achievement of equitable and competitive employee compensation. Works with line management to assess competitive labor market trends. Maintains a working knowledge of federal and state legislation and labor contracts that may affect compensation policies. May be responsible for incentive, bonus plan design and program administration to attract, motivate and retain employees. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for recruitment, selection, development, training, management of compensation staff.

  • Influences and guides KP's total rewards strategy.

  • Performs overall compensation program design and administration for a medium sized or complex division/region (includes strategy, policies and programs).

  • May be responsible for one or more HR functions or departments in addition to Compensation.

  • Generally participates as a member of the regional HR Leadership team.

  • Represents Compensation for complex inter-departmental/cross-regional projects and task forces.

  • Serves as primary point of contact for external audits/inquiries.

  • Manages client/customer relations at most senior executive levels within own region and/or across KP.

  • May support/advise the Labor Management Partnership & Labor Relations function.

  • Develops and manages department budget.

  • Major impact on functional and/or KP objectives and goals.

  • Responsibilities impact the integrated achievement of functional and/or KP objectives, that strongly contribute to long-term success or failure.

  • Erroneous decisions/recommendations will result in significant inefficiencies, and/or failure to meet functional objectives and may jeopardize overall KP activities.

  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives and project functional trends.

  • Requires experienced business or technical judgment to create novel solutions for thought-provoking, diverse and highly complex issues.

  • Analyzes recommendations made by others to solve issues bearing broad or company-wide impact.

  • May involve the application of sophisticated methodology.

  • Involves a high degree of interpretation and analysis of obscure or inconclusive data.

  • Has final authority to make most decisions, except for those that require additional management approval.

  • Requires a broad range of highly complex decision-making.

  • Some decisions could be precedent setting.

  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments.

  • Management reviews results to determine success of operation.

  • Regularly interacts with management or executive levels on matters concerning functional areas, multiple regions and/or customers.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum five (5) years of leadership or management experience.

  • Minimum eight (8) years of compensation or human resources experience to include salary administration.


  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

  • Requires advanced knowledge of compensation and working knowledge of multiple related functions.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum eight (8) years of leadership or management experience preferred.

  • Minimum ten (10) years of compensation experience preferred.
