Kaiser Permanente Media Relations Manager in Oakland, California
The Permanente Federation is the national support organization for the more than 21,000 physicians of the Permanente Medical Groups. Together, the eight Permanente Medical Groups care for more than 11 million Kaiser Permanente members across the country in Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. We serve as the national partner on behalf of the medical groups with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan on a variety of initiatives.We are seeking a Media Relations Manager who will further develop and execute The Permanente Federation-s media relations program, focusing on complex health care and health policy related external communications strategies.The Media Relations Manager will work as part of the External Affairs, Communications, and Brand (EACB) team and will be accountable for building and maintaining relationships with national media outlets and reporters, corresponding with outside vendors, pitching new content, and identifying key opportunities to tell the Permanente Medicine story to external audiences. The ideal candidate will have a deep journalism and/or public relations background with strong writing, critical thinking and project management skills, a compelling and engaging approach to storytelling, and experience with rapidly generating content. Additional work may include event and conference strategy, and creating content for websites and social media.
With direction from the Director of Communications and Public Relations, the Media Relations manager will work in close collaboration with various stakeholders at the national and regional level across The Permanente Federation, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals and the Permanente Medical Groups to plan and execute content and strategies that support the organizational brand and reputation and goals of The Permanente Federation and the Permanente Medical Groups. This is a new role to support the evolving Permanente Medicine brand, partnering with the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan National Media Relations team.
Handle a full range of media relations tasks in an independent and autonomous manner. Organize project elements, collect information, set timelines for completion of required tasks and see projects through to completion.
Work with the EACB team to identify the people, themes, angles, and stories for media promotion.
Manage incoming media inquiries, interviews, stories, and speaking requests and manage scheduling and staffing of interviews.
Create/update talking points, Q&A, fact sheets, toolkits, and spokesperson briefing documents.
Maintain speakers bureau/SME database using Salesforce and other collaborative tools.
Identify proactive opportunities, including media and conferences / speaking events.
Use digital monitoring tools and market research to support PR activities.
Use social media channels to amplify PR activities, and deliver digital pushes to support key announcements.
Act as point of contact with outside vendors/stakeholders/agencies as needed.
As part of the EACB team, help identify and rapidly develop creative content for web, internal and external audiences, including written and video physician stories and perspectives that differentiate Permanente Medicine in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
- Minimum ten (10) years of progressive related experience working on media relations and communications within a large, multi-divisional organization or agency.
- BA degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Health Care Administration or a related field.
License, Certification, Registration
Knowledge of current health care media and digital environment and trends.
Excellent written/verbal, listening and analytical skills, and proofreading and copy-editing skills required.
Ability to quickly synthesize complex information into reader friendly content.
Creativity and flexibility; ability to work within complex and sometimes ambiguous environments.
Demonstrated experience in successfully executing media relations strategies and working with executives to promote a brand or program.
Superior organizational, planning, coordination, and project management skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task, balance priorities, and set and manage timelines for deliverables.
Must possess strong customer service orientation with the ability to recognize, understand and meet the needs and expectations of the all customers within the organization.
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with larger teams and/or stakeholders.
Capable of professional interaction across all levels of personnel, including executive leadership, and technical subject matter experts.
Ability to navigate complex political situations in a professional, tactful and sensitive manner.
Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
Travel as required up to 5-15% of the time
Position will be in Oakland, CA.
Experience in Salesforce preferred.
Master's degree in Communications, Journalism or Health Policy preferred.
