Kaiser Permanente Assistant Area Director Public Affairs in Lancaster, California

Assists the Public Affairs Director in managing the full scope of Public Affairs activities within the Service Area. Consults on and/or provides development and implementation of internal and/or external public relations/communications strategies. Serves as project lead on high priority assignments/programs. Will manage day to day operations of department.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops and implements communications plans linking organizational goals with communication objectives, strategies, messages and vehicles.

  • Manages and monitors department budget to ensure program is within funding limits and in absence of Area Director, supervises all staff.

  • Provides consultation services to Medial Center staff regarding communications, drafts communications as needed.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of media relations strategy consistent with SA, regional, state and program policies.

  • Leads situation and crisis management teams as appropriate.

  • Collaborates with Director on the disbursement of Service Area community Service Funds.

  • Coordinates Community Relations programs and events and recommends new programs and/or strategies.

  • Assists Director with the development and implementation of local government relations strategies.

  • Monitors local legislation, researches and documents KPs position, tracks issues, helps maintain establishes relations with elected/appointed officials.

  • Participates in the development and execution of organization initiatives by serving as both a communication strategist and technician.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum five (5) years of experience implementing and supporting a Public Affairs program.


  • Bachelor's degree in public health, public administration, political science or related field OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience in media relations, working within local and regional governmental climate.

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Excellent project management and consulting skills.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred.
