Kaiser Permanente Regional Director Laboratory Services in Berkeley, California

In close collaboration with Regional Laboratory and Medical Center laboratory leaders, develops and implements unified regionwide laboratory service line strategy to ensure the consistent and highest level of quality and delivery of laboratory services and operations across the region. Builds strong performance-based and collaborative relationships with regional and local leadership to ensure the development and execution of a shared vision of laboratory excellence throughout the Northern California region. Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with regional, local and labor leaders to develop integrated and coordinated regionwide laboratory service line strategy and goals, prioritize initiatives, create common workplan, to achieve performance outcomes, in such areas as: quality, regulatory, compliance, risk management matters; technology and capital equipment strategy; physician and patient customer service; workforce planning; utilization management; facility space planning, etc.

  • In coordination with Regional and local experts and stakeholders, including Laboratory Technology Committee and Clinical Technology, develops a strategy and coordinates regionwide implementation efforts for Medical Center-based laboratories (e.g. IT projects, new operational workflows, etc.). Helps shape capital budgets for laboratory services.Incorporates change management principles to support successful implementations.

  • Creates alignment around regional and local testing to ensure a patient-centered approach that adds value and meets the needs of ordering physicians and providers.

  • Provides strategies targeted at recruiting and retaining well trained and competent laboratory staff who can provide highly skilled and specialized care. Strategies include workforce planning, leadership development, succession planning, career path development, liaising with labor relations, creating a culture of workplace safety, etc. Ensures there are consistent labor approaches in the laboratory regionwide.

  • Coordinates lab peer group meetings to move strategy forward. Ensures cross-communication between appropriate service lines and stakeholders.

  • Based on the agreed upon strategy, ensures the development of user-friendly reports to improve daily operations and track performance. Monitors performance metrics.

  • Advises leadership on market trends to keep abreast and stay competitive with latest trends and best practices in laboratory services.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum seven (7) years of general management experience in a multi-faceted, complex health care setting required.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a clinical laboratory required.

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working in a large physician group practice managing through influence and collaboration.


  • Master's degree in health care, hospital, business or public administration, or related field required.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Valid California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or limited specialist license required by start date.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful experience leading a broad range of complex organizational, strategic, & developmental projects, such as strategic planning, program implementation, quality improvement, human resources management and compliance, etc. in an integrated complex laboratory system.

  • Proven ability to lead and manage through influence and change.

  • An open, collaborative leadership style that promotes teamwork and partnership while achieving measurable results.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills (negotiation, listening, and communication skills) as characterized by effective interactions with a diverse range of internal and external constituents, stakeholders, and audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully problem solve and manage conflict professionally and develop dynamic and constructive working relationships with operational, physician, and labor partners.

  • Exceptional communications skills and ability to craft communication and engagement strategy.

  • Significant knowledge of applicable federal/state laws and regulations related to clinical laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve performance outcomes with represented labor; proven success in improving operational performance using a variety of methods and techniques for change management.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor Management Partnership and Unit Based Team environment.
